CT angiography versus coronary angiography: what is the difference?

CT angiography

In CT angiography contrast is given into a vein and a CT scanner images the heart's arteries. The procedure is non-invasive and takes a few minutes.

It is often used for screening and risk assessment.

Classic (invasive) coronary angiography

In classic angiography a catheter is passed from the wrist or groin artery to the heart's arteries. It gives precise results, and a stent can be placed in the same session if needed.

As an invasive procedure it needs more preparation and recovery.

Which test is right for you?

The choice depends on clinical indications, previous tests and the doctor's assessment. Your doctor will explain the difference for your situation.

This is general patient education, not individual medical advice. Do not stop or change medicines yourself. Fast or make other preparations only when instructed by your care team.
