Diabetes: screening and prevention
Why get screened?
Type 2 diabetes can develop silently for years. Early detection protects against complications — damage to the eyes, kidneys, nerves and heart.
Risk factors
Excess weight, inactivity, family history and high blood pressure raise the risk. Everyone over 45 and those with risk factors should screen regularly.
Screening and prevention
Screening uses fasting glucose and HbA1c. Healthy eating, activity and weight control significantly lower the risk.
