Cholesterol and heart health

What is cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a fatty substance carried in the blood. "Bad" (LDL) cholesterol builds plaques in the vessels, while "good" (HDL) helps clear them.

Testing

Total cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglycerides are checked with a blood test. Your doctor sets the testing interval based on your risk factors.

Control

Cutting saturated fats, eating vegetables and fibre, staying active and, when needed, medicines help control cholesterol. Target values are individual — discuss them with your doctor.

This is general patient education, not individual medical advice. Do not stop or change medicines yourself. Fast or make other preparations only when instructed by your care team.
