Angiography

Angiography images blood vessels, often using contrast and X-rays. Catheter-based methods may use wrist or groin access. Confirm the method and whether diagnosis alone or treatment is planned with the clinic.

The following information concerns catheter angiography; preparation and recovery for CT angiography may differ. Confirm the examination method and whether diagnosis alone or additional treatment is planned with the clinic.

Preparation

  1. Pre-assessment: tell the team about your medical conditions, allergies, previous contrast reactions and kidney problems. Your clinician may request an examination and blood tests.
  2. Medicines: provide a list of all medicines you take, especially blood thinners and diabetes medicines. Change or stop them only on your clinician’s instructions.
  3. Food and drink: ask the team when to stop eating or drinking. If sedation is planned, you may be asked not to eat for a few hours beforehand; do not fast without instructions.
  4. Getting home: arrange someone to take you home; do not drive yourself after the procedure. Ask your questions about preparation and risks before the visit.

Procedure duration

Catheter angiography usually takes 30 minutes to 2 hours. This is an estimate for the procedure alone; preparation and observation afterwards make the overall visit longer. Timing may change if additional treatment is planned. Confirm the expected time at the clinic beforehand.

After your visit

  • Observation: afterwards, the team checks your condition and catheter entry site. It is often possible to go home a few hours later on the same day, but an overnight stay may be needed; the team decides when you can leave.
  • Entry-site care: mild bruising and tenderness can occur. Follow the instructions you receive about dressings, washing and wound care.
  • Activity and follow-up: ask your clinician when you can return to driving, work, exercise and heavy lifting. There is no single recovery time for everyone; clarify how to receive results and arrange follow-up.

When to seek help

Seek medical advice immediately for entry-site bleeding that does not stop despite pressure, severe pain, redness, swelling and warmth, a firm painful lump, or an arm or leg that becomes pale or cold. Call emergency medical help for breathing difficulty, loss of consciousness or severe bleeding.
