MRI scans: preparation and safety
What is MRI?
MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to produce detailed images of organs. It is widely used for the brain, spine, joints and internal organs.
Because it works with a magnetic field rather than radiation, it can be repeated when appropriate.
How to prepare
Remove metal items — watches, jewellery, removable dentures — before the scan. Tell your doctor about any implants, metal fragments or heart devices.
Some scans use contrast; your doctor will tell you in advance. Lying still is important for image quality.
Safety
MRI on modern equipment is considered safe. Always mention past operations and devices in your body.
If you have claustrophobia, let the team know in advance — the doctor will find a suitable solution.
This is general patient education, not individual medical advice. Do not stop or change medicines yourself. Fast or make other preparations only when instructed by your care team.
