Recognise the signs of stroke
The FAST rule
Facial droop (F), arm weakness (A), speech difficulty (S) — if any of these appear, note the time and call emergency services immediately (T).
Other symptoms
Vision loss, loss of balance, a sudden severe headache and numbness on one side of the body can also signal a stroke.
Prevention
Controlling blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol, quitting smoking and staying active lower stroke risk. Heart rhythm problems should also be checked regularly.
This is general patient education, not individual medical advice. Do not stop or change medicines yourself. Fast or make other preparations only when instructed by your care team.
