Gastroscopy: preparation and procedure

What is it and why?

Gastroscopy examines the stomach lining with a thin, flexible instrument passed through the mouth. It is used for abdominal pain, bloating and reflux.

Preparation

You are usually asked not to eat or drink for 6–8 hours before. Tell the doctor about your medicines, especially blood thinners.

The procedure and after

The throat may be numbed or light sedation used. The test takes 10–20 minutes; after sedation, go home without driving.

This is general patient education, not individual medical advice. Do not stop or change medicines yourself. Fast or make other preparations only when instructed by your care team.
