Back pain: when to see a doctor?
Ordinary back pain
Most back pain comes from muscle strain and improves within weeks. Staying as active as the pain allows speeds recovery.
Red flags
Weakness in the legs, loss of bladder control, pain with fever or after injury — see a doctor immediately. These can signal a serious cause.
Assessment and prevention
A neurologist's assessment and MRI may be arranged when needed. Good posture, strengthening exercises and weight control help prevent recurrence.
This is general patient education, not individual medical advice. Do not stop or change medicines yourself. Fast or make other preparations only when instructed by your care team.
